Design & Technology

At our school we want the children to have the opportunity to develop Design and Technology knowledge and skills that inspire them and support them to understand how to use design and technology effectively in their everyday lives.  We encourage children to think creatively, but also practically and provide opportunities to develop skills across a range of contexts, including as part of our Outdoor curriculum.  As well as technical knowledge, children learn about designing for a purpose, planning, making and then evaluating their final product.

Every year group has three Design Technology projects that build on prior knowledge and skills and our spiral curriculum ensures that children develop their understanding key concepts, such as mechanisms, structures, textiles, electrical designs and food and nutrition.  We know that cooking and nutrition is such an important life skill so a food based project is included in every year group which helps children learn about healthy lifestyles, as well as how to make a variety of dishes and adapt recipes.

Wherever possible, our Design Technology projects link to topics to bring learning to life and provide additional context for their learning.

Children develop their vocabulary through their Design Technology learning and enjoy sharing their finished products with others, often being displayed around the school.
